Couple asks court to re-unite them, 4 months after divorce

A Lusaka couple, Silan Mumba and Astridah Mvula, has made headlines after seeking to reverse their divorce, just four months after their separation. The couple, who divorced on June 18, had split following Mumba’s declaration in court that he regretted marrying Mvula.

The court had ordered him to compensate Mvula with K3,600, while also awarding her custody of their child, with a monthly maintenance fee of K600.

However, Mumba, facing the realities of living alone and the burdens of everyday life, particularly during Zambia’s power shortages, had a change of heart. He approached his former wife, seeking reconciliation.

After accepting his apology, both families advised the couple to go back to court to officially cancel the divorce.

During the court session, Magistrate Lewis Mumba, who presided over the case, expressed approval of their decision to reconcile. He emphasized that the court does not favor divorce, as it often negatively impacts children, and commended the couple for involving their families in resolving their differences.

“The court loves to see such things. We are against divorce because it affects children. But people think we love to see people separate. No. It is good that you two sat down with both families and have decided to reconcile. The court shall not stop you but simply advise that you both work on the things that led to your divorce,” said Magistrate Lewis Mumba as he counselled the couple.

The magistrate encouraged the couple to seek further counseling and advised them to adhere to traditional practices, including paying a small fee to Mvula’s family, symbolizing a fresh start.

Following these proceedings, the court annulled the divorce, allowing the couple to reunite and begin rebuilding their marriage.
