Clever Dube, a 44-year-old man from Mzilikazi in Bulawayo, is facing charges of illegal possession and theft of aluminium cables after being apprehended in Sauerstown with 10 kg of stolen property owned by the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company.
During his court appearance before Bulawayo Regional Magistrate Chiwundura, Dube pleaded not guilty and has been remanded in custody until October 18.
The incident unfolded on the night of September 9, when Advance Seke, the informant, was driving his Honda Fit home and spotted Dube dragging the overhead aluminium cables along Myrtle Road.
Recognizing the suspicious activity, Seke bravely intervened, apprehending Dube and contacting the authorities to report the theft.
When the police arrived, they took both Dube and the recovered cables into custody for further investigation.
The total value of the stolen cables is estimated at $200, highlighting the financial impact of such thefts on essential services.
This case sheds light on the ongoing problem of cable thefts in the region, which can severely disrupt electricity supply and pose challenges for utility companies.
As Dube awaits trial, the community watches closely, hoping for justice and increased efforts to combat the ongoing issue of infrastructure theft.
