Police are investigating the theft of US$20,000 from a cash-in-transit van on October 16, which was transporting money from Beitbridge to Mutare.
Four guards from Fawcett Security Company are being questioned.
According to police spokesman Paul Nyathi, the guards violated company rules by giving rides to two passengers—a man and a woman.
The passengers rode in the cargo area with the cash box.
The woman was dropped off at Rutenga, and the man got off at Ngundu.
It was at Ngundu that the guards noticed the cash was missing. They then returned to Rutenga to report the theft to the police.
Detectives from the Mwenezi criminal investigations department are leading the inquiry, and the guards—Brine Matsena, 30, Benny Nyambi, 52, Confidence Tapiwa Chekero, 27, and Jefitha Chipo Chipfunde, 42—are currently in police custody.
