The Zimbabwean government has accorded a state-assisted funeral to six artisanal miners who tragically lost their lives in a mine dump landslide in Kwekwe last Thursday.
According to ZBC, the victims, Simon Chauke, Offias Ncube, Edward Phiri, Gasiyani Banda, Marshall Mpofu, and Ephraim Ncube, were honored in a funeral parade held in Kwekwe on Sunday. Family members of the deceased expressed their gratitude to the government for their support during this difficult time.
“We’re thankful for the government’s intervention; it’s been a tough time for us,” one relative said. Another added, “The loss is unbearable, but we appreciate the government’s help.
The government took this opportunity to caution miners against venturing into disused mines, emphasizing the importance of safety.
Mr. Charlton Murove, acting director of the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works, praised the Central Protection Unit’s swift response, which saved one life and ensured the timely retrieval of the bodies.
