The police in Pumula have made significant strides in addressing stock th3ft offenses by arresting two individuals, Jethro Dube (40) and Itai Gwasura (36), in connection with a case originating from Nyamandlovu, while actively pursuing a third suspect, Jaison Ndlovu.
The arrests occurred on October 19 when police officers, who were enjoying lunch at a butchery in Pumula East, observed a suspicious white Honda Fit, which contained three people, parked nearby.
Upon approaching the vehicle, the officers found it filled with cattle carcasses, and the occupants were unable to produce any necessary permits, which led to their immediate arrest.
Further investigations revealed that Gwasura directed police to his home, where they uncovered various meat products, including offals, ox heads, and a substantial quantity of steak, all of which were believed to be stolen.
During questioning, Gwasura indicated that the carcasses had been brought to him by Dube and Ndlovu, claiming they were sourced from Village 4’s grazing area.
The police took Dube and Gwasura back to the site of the alleged slaughter, where Dube confirmed the location of the two slain animals, further solidifying their involvement in the crime.
The registered owner of the vehicle, which was seized as evidence, was identified, deepening the inquiry into the network behind the operation.
Inspector Abednigo Ncube emphasized the imperative for local butchery businesses to strictly adhere to regulations regarding the sale of inspected beef from licensed abattoirs rather than engaging in transactions involving unverified and potentially unsafe meat.
