The Zimbabwe Mighty Warriors are set to kick off their 2024 COSAFA Women’s Championship campaign with a match against Mozambique at the Isaac Wolfson Stadium in South Africa on October 24, 2024.
Coach Sithethelelwe “Kwinji 15” Sibanda has blended experience and youth in her squad as Zimbabwe aims for their second COSAFA Women’s title. Her squad includes Ethel Chinyerere, Maud Mafuruse, Tanyaradzwa Chihoro, and Peacemore Kenende.
The Mighty Warriors are led by Ethel Chinyerere, popularly known as ‘Haaland’. Chinyerere has been a regular goal scorer in the Women’s Super League, though she has missed national team call-ups due to injury in the past.
Chinyerere, the Mighty Warriors’ chief striker, will spearhead the attack alongside the speedy Maud Mafuruse, while Ennert Chemhere from FC Platinum Royals is expected to control the tempo in midfield.
The Mighty Warriors must be vigilant against Mozambique, a team that has been on the rise and is considered one of the tournament’s dark horses.
The top team from Group D, which also features Lesotho, will advance to the knockout stage of the tournament.
Zimbabwe’s opening match against Mozambique, initially scheduled for Gelvandale Stadium, will now be played at the Isaac Wolfson Stadium. Their final group match against Lesotho will take place at Madiba Stadium on Sunday.
