Zimbabwe’s most prominent opposition leader, Nelson Chamisa, former founder and president of the Citizens Coalition for Change, has expressed support for the renaming of Zimbabwe’s provinces. Chamisa acknowledged that some of his ideas have inspired and resonated across Zimbabwe’s political landscape.
In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Chamisa emphasized that the renaming of provinces was part of his manifesto in the 2018 elections when he was a presidential candidate for the MDC Alliance. This renaming of the country’s 10 provinces was identified as one of ten key transformation markers in his campaign.
“RENAMING OF PROVINCES…This has always been our manifesto issue. I like it when ideas inspire and resonate across the political divide. Proud to be ideas-driven and policy-centric. Reasserting our record as transformative thought leaders. Our vision for Zimbabwe is solid. Below is an excerpt from our previous election manifesto. The future is exciting!” Chamisa wrote.
Chamisa’s remarks follow ZANU-PF’s recent announcement to rename Zimbabwe’s provinces to eliminate colonial-era names, which the ruling party argues have historically fueled division. This resolution emerged from ZANU-PF’s 21st Annual National People’s Conference, concluded in Bulawayo on Saturday.
