Zimbabwe’s government has taken swift action against two Chinese mining companies accused of causing environmental damage in Hurungwe through alluvial mining along Sanyati River.
According to Newsday, the Environment Management Agency (Ema) recently banned these companies, citing unauthorized mining activities. Located about 190 kilometers west of Karoi farming town, Sanyati River forms the border between Hurungwe and Kariba rural districts.
The companies in question had heavy machinery, including excavators and water pumps, to carry out their operations.
This crackdown is part of a broader effort to address environmental concerns and labor rights ab_ses associated with Chinese-owned mining companies in Zimbabwe.
Local communities and civic organizations have raised alarms about the operations of these companies, citing issues such as t0xic waste discharge into water sources, crop yield decline, livestock de@th, and dwindling fish populations [1).
The ban on these two Chinese companies marks a significant step in protecting Zimbabwe’s environment and natural resources. Ema’s provincial spokesperson, Munyaradzi Nhariswa, confirmed that the agency visited Sanyati River in response to a complaint regarding unauthorized mining activities
