The Zimbabwean government has ordered the Harare City Council to stop destroying homes in the capital city.
This decision is meant to support the national effort to build more houses, led by the Ministry of National Housing and Social Amenities.
Minister Daniel Garwe, who has been in this position since 2019, told the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) that the demolitions go against the government’s goal to provide affordable homes for people in Zimbabwe.
He emphasized that this initiative is very important to him.

“The demolitions are not in line with our plans,” Garwe said. He explained that Vice President Kembo Mohadi told local leaders to stop the demolitions. However, he made it clear that this does not mean people can build homes anywhere they want. “This is not permission to build illegally. The law will still be followed,” he warned.
This directive comes after the Harare City Council recently demolished houses in the Belvedere area, which were valued at over $100,000.
Mayor Jacob Mafume defended these actions by saying that residents had received warnings as far back as 2019 about building in certain places.
The council said that demolishing these homes was necessary to maintain city planning rules and prevent unplanned building.
