Three r0bbery suspects ; Sarezi Shonhiwa, 57, Tafadzwa Chakuteta, 36, and Willye Chirau, 32 appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court facing multiple charges of armed r0bbery and violations of the Firearms Act.
The accused allegedly targeted the Nutrition Africa business premises in Tynwald South in the early hours of June 23, 2023.
During the heist, they reportedly threatened the complainant and his colleagues, forcing them to the ground and binding their hands and legs with shoelaces.
The suspects then confiscated their cellphones and covered their heads with sacks, before taking them to a room containing the company’s money.
They ransacked this room and made away with various groceries worth approximately USD 460, but their escape was thwarted when an alarm was triggered, prompting their flight from the scene.
Just weeks later, on July 12, 2023, they were accused of executing another armed r0bbery at an industrial site in Tynwald, where they allegedly stole USD 1,500 in cash and electronic gadgets valued at USD 4,500.
In a brazen move, on October 24, 2024, they targeted a house in Christon Bank, stealing property worth USD 20,000, including a Toyota RAV4.
Shonhiwa was arrested on November 9, 2024, following a tip-off, having been captured on CCTV during a separate robbery at a Goromonzi farm earlier that month.
His arrest led to Chirau’s capture in Murehwa and the recovery of stolen jewelry. Chakuteta was apprehended shortly after on November 11, 2024, found in possession of a pistol linked to the Christon Bank r0bbery.
The trio’s crime spree culminated in the Goromonzi robbery, where they reportedly exited with property valued at USD 16,000.
They were remanded in custody, and advised to apply for bail at the High Court as the investigation continues into their extensive criminal activities.
