Byo police report escalating crime trends ahead of festivities

Bulawayo’s police force has raised alarms about a potential increase in crime rates during the festive season, attributing this concern to a notable rise in armed r0bbery incidents recorded in October compared to the previous year.

Inspector Abednico Ncube, the provincial police spokesperson, revealed during a recent business luncheon organized by Peace Security that armed r0bbery cases surged from just two in October of last year to an alarming 13 this year.

He emphasized that these statistics pertain specifically to incidents where firearms were involved, distinguishing them from other forms of r0bbery that may utilize weapons like machetes or knives.

Alarmingly, over ten of the armed r0bberies in October targeted service stations, indicating a troubling trend that could threaten public safety in these communal spaces.

Additionally, police data showed an increase in non-armed r0bberies as well, with more than 80 reported cases involving machetes, up from 56 last year, further highlighting the shifting landscape of crime in the region.

The police are enhancing their vigilance and operational strategies in anticipation of the festive season, recognizing that this period is often marked by increased criminal activity as people engage in holiday shopping and festivities.

Local businesses are being urged to bolster their security measures, including installation of surveillance cameras and alarm systems, to safeguard against potential threats.

The community’s partnership with law enforcement is deemed crucial in combating the rising tide of crime, as public awareness and cooperation can significantly aid police efforts.

Ncube’s warnings underscore the necessity for residents and businesses alike to remain alert and proactive in ensuring their safety.

The police are also planning increased patrols and community outreach initiatives to educate the public on crime prevention tactics.

As the holiday season approaches, authorities hope to forge stronger ties with businesses to collaboratively address security challenges.

The citizens are called upon to report suspicious activities and provide any information that could assist law enforcement in averting potential crimes.

With the rising statistics, the call for community vigilance has never been more urgent as Bulawayo prepares for what could be a tumultuous festive season.
