Vannessa Moyo, a 26-year-old woman from Matsapa village in Nyanga, found herself in a Gweru Magistrates’ Court facing th3ft charges after a brazen attempt to ste@l property from a local site.
On the evening of November 11, 2024, at approximately 2010 hours, the complainant had entrusted Tadiwanashe Chazuka with 21 two-liter buckets.
Unbeknownst to them, Moyo seized the opportunity to pilfer 9 of these buckets.
Little did she know, however, that her actions had attracted the attention of a vigilant security guard stationed nearby.
The guard quickly alerted Chazuka of Moyo’s theft, prompting him to sprint after the accused.
Chazuka was able to catch up with Moyo and successfully apprehend her, preventing her from escaping with the stolen goods.
Once apprehended, Chazuka wasted no time in reporting the incident to the police, who promptly arrived to take Moyo into custody.
The total value of the stolen property was assessed at a mere USD 18, and fortunately, all the buckets were recovered unharmed.
During the court proceedings, Moyo expressed remorse for her actions, emphasizing that it was a moment of poor judgment.
Taking into account her plea for leniency and the fact that the stolen items had been returned intact, the magistrate sentenced Moyo to 2 months in prison.
However, the sentence was wholly suspended for a period of 5 years, giving Moyo an opportunity to reflect on her actions and avoid future legal troubles.
