A 24-year-old man named Mangisi Thanks from Claremont Park, Gweru, recently appeared in the Gweru Magistrates’ Court, where he faced charges of negligent driving following an incident that occurred on December 3, 2023.
Reports indicate that he was operating a Honda Fit on E.D. Mnangagwa Street, heading towards Mkoba, with three passengers traveling alongside him.
In an unfortunate turn of events, he collided with another Honda Fit at a rail level crossing after failing to maintain a safe distance.
Evidence presented in court outlined several key areas of negligence attributed to him, including traveling too closely to the vehicle in front, not keeping a proper lookout given the surrounding circumstances, and being unable to stop or take reasonable action when it became apparent that a collision was imminent.
The court found Mangisi’s actions to be careless and irresponsible, resulting in a judgment that included a fine of USD 200.
In addition, he received a wholly suspended two-year prison sentence, signifying that he would not serve time unless he reoffended within the suspension period.
Furthermore, the court took a strict stance on his driving privileges, ordering him not to operate any motor vehicle for a duration of five months.
Mangisi’s experience serves as a reminder of the potential consequences of negligent behavior on the roads.
As he contemplates the repercussions of his actions, it is hoped that this incident will encourage him, and others, to adopt safer driving practices in the future.
The judgment reflects a broader commitment to enhancing road safety and holding drivers accountable for their actions.
