In a significant operation, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly known as the Hawks, apprehended two individuals in Brakpan for illegal possession of gold valued at R15 million.
The suspects include Joachim Chivayo, a 33-year-old Zimbabwean man, and 20-year-old South African Ayanda Brian Gungwa.
According to Captain Lloyd Ramovha, the Gauteng spokesperson for the Hawks, the arrests were a result of rigorous investigative efforts by the serious organized crime unit in collaboration with their head office. “This operation marks a major advancement in our ongoing battle against illicit precious metal trading,” Ramovha stated.
The arrests occurred on Tuesday around 1:15 PM during a well-coordinated sting operation. Law enforcement officials caught the suspects while they were attempting to sell six bars of unwrought gold.

Chivayo and Gungwa have been charged with illegal possession of gold and violating the Precious Metals Act, with their case filed at the Brakpan police station. They made their initial court appearance on Wednesday and have been remanded in custody.
Ongoing investigations are being conducted to trace the origins of the gold and identify any other individuals involved in this illegal trade.
Brigadier Paulina Sekgobela, acting provincial head of the Hawks in Gauteng, commended the team’s efforts in executing the arrests. “The Gauteng Hawks remain committed to enforcing the law and safeguarding our nation’s precious resources. The dedication and collaboration displayed in this operation are truly commendable,” she remarked.
