Robert Myambo, a 37-year-old resident of Zibuke village in Chipinge was sentenced to imprisonment after being found guilty of stock theft.
The incident unfolded in the early hours of December 1, 2024, when the complainant secured her goats in a pen and went to bed, unaware that her livestock was in jeopardy.
At approximately 1:00 AM, Myambo approached the homestead under the pretense of asking for tobacco, which raised suspicions the following morning when the complainant noticed the absence of three goats.
Alarmed, she immediately informed her fellow villagers, who rallied together to address the situation.
The collective decision was made to search Myambo’s residence, leading to the discovery of a black and white hide alongside a carcass weighing around 10 kilograms ; strong evidence linking him to the crime.
The value of the goats stolen amounted to USD 120.
In court, the evidence presented clearly demonstrated Myambo’s involvement in the theft, resulting in a stern 12-month prison sentence.
However, in a somewhat lenient measure, three months of the sentence were suspended.
This conditional suspension mandates Myambo to pay restitution, ensuring that the victim is compensated for her loss.
The community, while relieved at the outcome, remains vigilant, recognizing the importance of protecting their livestock and supporting each other against crime.
As the local residents reflect on these events, they are reminded of the importance of safeguarding their agricultural assets against potential threats.
