The government of Zimbabwe has announced the construction of seven stainless steel grain silos worth US$25 million at the GMB depot in Gokwe South district.
The Grain marketing Board (GMB) aims to expand its grain storage capacity through the construction of additional silos across the country in line with government’s trust to increase the national strategic reserves.
The construction of new project is set for January 2025. Newsreportzim.com has reliably informed by the Permanent Secretary for Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Nick Mangwana’s X post.
“Construction of seven stainless steel grain silos worth US$25 million at the GMB depot in Gokwe South district has been penciled for January 2025. The construction seven wholly Govt funded by silos will be carried out under the phase 2 of the program which has seen several silos being constructed in eight provinces under phase 1 of the same Programme,” part of the statement reads.
Seven silos with a storage capacity of 56 000 metric tonnes are under construction in provinces that include Manicaland, Masvingo, Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland West and Matabeleland North.
The construction of the silos is creating employment, boosting businesses in the construction sector and supporting the industry supplying materials
The government is targeting a cereal production of over 3,2 million tonnes to ensure food and nutrition security as well as ensuring farmers grow enough for their own family sustenance with some left for sale.
The 2024/25 summer season production plan also focuses on food and feed crops, oilseeds and industrial crops, for both local consumption and export.
