The police in Kabale are searching for 19-year-old Nicholas Niwagaba, who is alleged to have m_rdered his father, Darius Turamyomwe, 52, from Omumihanga Village, Kitumba Sub-county in Kabale District.
According to Elly Maate, the Regional Police Spokesperson, the incident occurred on December 18, 2024, at around 8:00 PM, when the deceased was att@cked by his son following a disagreement over land.
“The father told his son that the land was his and suggested that he leave and start his own life, which led to the vi0lent altercation,” said Maate.
He further explained that when the deceased’s wife, Kyarimpa Peragia, returned from the trading center, she found her husband lying in the sitting room, bleeding from his mouth and with a sW0llen head.
“Kyarimpa was informed by her husband that he had been beaten by their son and sought help from a neighbor, Christopher, who assisted in taking the victim to Kabale Referral Hospital,” said Maate.
Maate added that despite being admitted, Turamyomwe passed away in the early hours of Saturday.
He also said that police were alerted by the area chairperson, Patrick Tumuranze, who visited the scene, documented the evidence, and conducted a postmortem. Investigations into the whereabouts of the suspect have begun.
The police spokesperson expressed regret over the incident, emphasising how tragic it is for a son to k!ll his own father over such a dispute. He appealed to the public for any information on Niwagaba’s whereabouts to assist in bringing him to justice.
“I humbly appeal to anyone who knows the whereabouts of the suspect to report immediately to the police,” Maate said.
There have been reports of an increase in land-related disputes in Kabale District, driven by population pressure, which has created a worrying trend that requires immediate attention.
