Pope Francis, at the age of 88, is reportedly facing serious health challenges, leading to rehearsal preparations for his funeral.
Swiss newspaper Blick has claimed that, due to concerns for the pontiff’s survival amid pneumonia, the Swiss Guard is currently under a curfew to prepare for the possibility of his d#ath.
On Friday, the Pope was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital after experiencing significant chest pain.
Despite this health concern, he had resisted calls to leave the Vatican for several days. Medical evaluations revealed a “complex” respiratory infection, prompting the cancellation and rescheduling of several papal audiences this week.
The Vatican confirmed on Tuesday that the Pope is suffering from pneumonia, along with asthmatic bronchitis, which necessitates a cortisone antibiotic treatment. In light of his medical history—having undergone lung surgery years ago—the seriousness of the current infection is heightened. Laboratory tests and chest X-rays have resulted in what the Vatican describes as a “complex picture” regarding his health.
On Monday, it was determined that the Pope is dealing with a polymicrobial respiratory tract infection, indicating a mix of viruses and bacteria leading to double pneumonia. Reports have emerged that close associates of Francis have heard him express concern by stating, “I might not make it this time.”

Italian Cardinal Angelo Comastri appeared on broadcaster Rai, noting that despite his condition, the Pope is maintaining a calm demeanor, reflecting a faith-based acceptance of his situation, saying, “His helm is in the hands of the Lord.”
As the Vatican remains tight-lipped about the Pope’s response to treatment, it is reported that individuals have begun traveling to Gemelli Hospital to pray for his recovery.
Medical expert Dr. Carmelo D’Asero commented on the Pope’s lack of fever, indicating that his condition may not be as favorable as it seems, since a lower immune response could signal increased concern.
While the Vatican has not specified how long Francis will remain hospitalized, they acknowledge the need for an “adequate” stay to address his complex clinical condition, which has already required numerous adjustments to his medication.
The Pope himself has previously stated that he has “already prepared” his tomb, hinting at a break from tradition regarding his burial arrangements.
