Train Collision with ZRP Vehicle in Gweru Raises Concerns

A disturbing incident occurred in Gweru on Tuesday, May 13, when a Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) vehicle was struck by a train near the Vehicle Inspection Department (VID). According to the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ), the accident happened because the police officer driving the Mahindra truck failed to stop at the level crossing, violating basic traffic rules.

The NRZ statement emphasized that the crash was a direct result of the driver’s failure to adhere to safety protocols at the level crossing. This incident marks the second time this year a ZRP vehicle has been involved in a collision with a train. In January, a similar incident occurred involving a police-driven Ford Ranger.

The NRZ has issued a stern reminder to all drivers, including law enforcement officers, to exercise extreme caution when approaching road/rail crossings. Drivers are urged to come to a complete stop, check for approaching trains, and proceed with caution. The NRZ’s statement concludes with a clear message: never attempt to race a train.

While The Sunday Mail reported that there were two police officers in the Mahindra truck at the time of the crash, the NRZ did not provide any details about the condition of the driver or the passenger. The ZRP has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.

This incident highlights the importance of adhering to safety protocols and traffic regulations, especially when it comes to road/rail crossings. The NRZ’s call for caution serves as a timely reminder to all drivers to prioritize safety and vigilance on the roads.
