Tragic Incidents at Beitbridge Border Post

Two men died after collapsing while undergoing border formalities at the Beitbridge Border Post in Matabeleland South province over the weekend. The incidents, which occurred on Friday and Saturday, have left authorities investigating the causes of death.

A 48-year-old South African truck driver transporting peas from the Democratic Republic of Congo collapsed and died on Saturday at around 4 pm. According to Chief Superintendent Mesuli Ncube, Beitbridge District Police Commander, the driver had just completed immigration procedures and returned to his vehicle when he suddenly collapsed. Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver had complained of feeling unwell in his work WhatsApp group the previous day.

The second incident occurred on Friday when a diabetic passenger from Murehwa died during a customs inspection. The 48-year-old man was traveling with his 21-year-old son aboard a Best Express Logistics bus from Pretoria. His legs were visibly swollen when he boarded the bus in South Africa. During the customs process around 10 am, the man’s son noticed he was unresponsive, and port health officials and police were called to the scene.

Both cases are being treated as sudden deaths, and post-mortem examinations are pending to determine the exact causes of death. The police are in the process of notifying the deceased individuals’ next of kin.
