Harare Hits Hard: City Declares War on Lawlessness Amidst Water Crisis

The City of Harare is cracking down on lawlessness and illegal business operations, and it’s not just about the fines – it’s also about water . With the city facing water cuts, businesses in arrears or operating without valid licenses will face disconnections. Acting Town Clerk Phakhamile Mabhena Moyo warned that the city will start disconnecting water services to non-compliant properties, effective immediately.

The City Health Department is also getting involved, conducting inspections and threatening to close down premises without running water. This move aims to enforce the Public Health Act and the Harare Licensed Premises By-Law. Landlords and tenants, take note: one non-compliant tenant could shut down the entire building.

Business owners are urged to regularize their operations, settle outstanding arrears, and obtain valid licenses. The City of Harare has even set up a dedicated desk at Rowan Martin to speed up the process. Don’t try to cut corners – pay your licenses directly at City offices and avoid unscrupulous individuals masquerading as enforcement agencies .

Will this blitz achieve its goals, or will businesses find ways to circumvent the rules? One thing’s for sure – the City of Harare is serious about enforcing compliance.
