In a tragic incident, a game ranger lost his life after being attacked by a black rhino in Zimbabwe’s Save Conservancy. According to the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks), the ranger, identified as Knowledge Mudzimureka, was on patrol with a colleague on May 26 when they stumbled upon a mother black rhino and its calf.
The rhino charged at Mudzimureka, inflicting severe injuries to his abdomen, lung, shoulder, head, and knee. Despite being airlifted to a private hospital in Harare, Mudzimureka succumbed to his injuries on June 8 after a brave two-week battle.
ZimParks praised Mudzimureka as a dedicated member of their team, who played a crucial role in protecting endangered black rhinos from poachers. With fewer than 600 black rhinos remaining in Zimbabwe, conservation efforts rely heavily on rangers like Mudzimureka, who risk their lives to safeguard these majestic creatures.
