A bombshell revelation has rocked the South African government, with Police Minister Senzo Mchunu accused of having ties to notorious criminal gangs. The allegations, made by KwaZulu-Natal police boss Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, claim Mchunu is being financially backed by a controversial businessman linked to a powerful drug cartel.
According to Mkhwanazi, Mchunu’s alleged connections to the underworld have compromised the integrity of the police force, particularly in investigations into politically motivated murders. Mkhwanazi alleges that Mchunu dismantled an elite police task force that was closing in on powerful suspects, removing 121 case files from the unit without authorization.
Mkhwanazi shared damning evidence, including text messages and a payment allegedly made by the businessman, Vusimuzi Matlala, to prove the links between Matlala and Mchunu. Matlala had a lucrative contract with the police before it was cancelled after his arrest for attempted murder in May.
Mchunu has vehemently denied the allegations, calling them “wild” and without merit. However, National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola has promised to respond to the allegations later this week, during the announcement of a new acting head for the crime intelligence division.
The scandal has sent shockwaves through the South African government, raising questions about Mchunu’s fitness to lead the police ministry. As the investigation unfolds, one thing is certain: the allegations will not go away quietly. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
