A woman who lost her son in the Bay Horse mine collapse in Chegutu, 100 kilometres (62 miles) south-west of the Zimbabwean capital Harare, wailing and being consoled by a relative.
Bay Horse Mine, known for its rich mineral deposits, turned into a nightmare on Friday as a mine shaft collapsed. Amidst the desperate search for survivors, the fate of those still trapped remains uncertain.
Deputy Minister of Mines and Mining Development, Polite Kambamura, confirmed the incident, initially stating that 34 miners were trapped when the mine caved in. However, the Zimbabwe Miners Federation (ZMF) issued a conflicting statement, indicating that 42 individuals were underground when the mine collapsed.
Rescue efforts are currently underway, with a dedicated team working tirelessly to reach the trapped miners.According to source, the rescue team has so far managed to retrieve nine bodies from the mine yesterday
“At least nine bodies have been retrieved from the mine by yesterday, while another 15 miners were still trapped underground and rescue efforts were still underway.”
Meanwhile, in these critical moments, the ZMF has urged the public to refrain from sharing unverified information on social media and instead await official communications from law enforcement authorities, including the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the Ministry of Mines and Mineral Development, and other government agencies.
