In a surprising turn of events, popular social media influencer Mai TT finds herself celebrating her 37th birthday behind bars at Chikurubi Female Prison. Despite her current circumstances, Mai TT, real name Felistus Murata, has chosen to embrace her time in prison as an opportunity for growth and self-reflection. In a heartfelt Facebook post, she shares her experiences and expresses gratitude for the lessons she has learned.
Mai TT’s birthday celebration in prison is not the result of a planned visit, but rather a consequence of a mistake that turned into a crime. In a Facebook post, she reflects on a request she made two years ago when she visited Chikurubi female prison. She had asked the authorities to grant her permission to be remanded in custody along with other inmates, in order to gain a firsthand understanding of their experiences. However, her request was denied, as she could only be remanded if she committed a crime.
Mai TT is currently serving a nine-month prison term after being convicted for the theft of trust property in June 2022. The sentencing was delivered by Harare Magistrate Mrs Munashe Chibanda. She was initially sentenced to 12 months imprisonment, with six months suspended on the condition that she does not commit a similar offence within the next five years. Therefore, the effective prison term amounts to six months. Additionally, Mai TT faced consequences for defaulting on a previous community service sentence, resulting in an additional three-month prison term. In total, she was sentenced to serve nine months in custody.
Now, Mai TT finds herself experiencing prison life firsthand. In her Facebook post, she expresses her gratitude to God for the opportunity to learn and grow, despite being in a challenging environment. She acknowledges that every mistake she has made in life has been a lesson, and she is determined to make the most of her time behind bars.
Despite her circumstances, Mai TT remains positive and celebrates her birthday with her fellow inmates. She acknowledges that she is missed by her fans and loved ones, and she reciprocates those feelings. Mai TT promises to share her stories and experiences once she is released from prison. In the meantime, she encourages her supporters to celebrate her birthday with her and sends her love to everyone.
Mai TT’s resilience and positive attitude are evident in a video that emerged from Chikurubi Female Prison. In the video, she captivates her fellow inmates with a performance of the popular song “Chiremera” by Jah Prayzah. She skillfully incorporates the lyrics to question why people are quick to criticize her flaws without acknowledging their own shortcomings.
