A Harare woman was granted a protection order against her drunken stepson, who she accused of causing disturbances and noise when he comes home intoxicated. Winnie Magwenzi told magistrate Sharon Mashavira that her stepson Victor Kanyemba was an alcoholic who would shout and make noise when he returned home drunk.
She said “I do not have a problem with him when he is sober, but every time he comes back home drunk we do not sleep because he will be shouting and making noise.” Magwenzi said her tenants had vacated their property due to Kanyemba’s behaviour when drunk.
She said “I am afraid that I will starve because tenants don’t stay long complaining about his behaviour.” Kanyemba did not deny the charges and apologized to the court, asking for forgiveness. Mashavira granted Magwenzi the protection order, which will prevent Kanyemba from harassing or disturbing her.
Protection orders are commonly issued by courts in cases where a person feels threatened or endangered by the behaviour of another individual. They set out restrictions and conditions to minimize contact and conflict, and can carry penalties for violation.
