In a shocking incident that has left the Methodist Church in Greendale in disbelief, thieves managed to break into the premises and make off with over US$5 000 cash and valuable items.
The incident occurred over the weekend, leaving the church community in disbelief and prompting a police investigation.
Lovemore Gara, the caretaker of the Methodist Church in Greendale, had diligently locked up the premises on Saturday evening, unaware of the unfortunate events that would unfold overnight.
The following morning, Gara received a distressing call from Olivia Mandivheyi, the church secretary, informing him of the break-in.
Cash and Laptops Stolen in Bold Heist
The audacious thieves not only made off with a locked cash box containing a significant sum of money but also seized the opportunity to snatch three laptops from the church premises.
The stolen cash box contained a total of US$5,379, along with £5 and R140.
According to Harare provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, the break-in has been confirmed, and investigations are currently underway. Inspector Chakanza stated,
“Police are investigating a case of unlawful entry and theft where a local church lost cash and property worth US$6,679.”
In addition to the Methodist Church break-in, the police are also looking into other recent thefts.
One such incident occurred at MWORS Sports Betting in Machipisa, Highfield, where thieves managed to steal TVs worth US$1,200 on Friday night.
Another break-in took place at Capital Foods, resulting in the theft of US$2,000 from a safe.
Police in Harare are also investigating a case of robbery which occurred at a house along Guthrie Close, Marlborough on Sunday.
Five male suspects who were armed with an unidentified pistol and a machete attacked the complainant and his gardener before stealing US$20 000 cash.
