A devastating discovery was made on April 1, 2025, when a newborn baby boy was found abandoned under a bridge along the Mukuvisi River in Harare. The infant, wrapped in a black weekender bag, was rescued and rushed to Sally Mugabe Hospital for treatment.
This heartbreaking incident is part of a disturbing trend of baby dumping in Harare. According to Dr. Hopewell Mungani, clinical director at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital, the hospital reported 15 cases of baby dumping in 2020, followed by 14 cases between January and October the next year.
Experts point to a complex array of factors contributing to this issue, including lack of support, financial constraints, limited knowledge of family planning, and inadequate access to contraceptives.
As the investigation unfolds, police are urging anyone with information about the abandoned baby boy to come forward. If you or someone you know has any details, please report to the nearest police station and help bring closure to this case.
