A new African record has been set as a 70-year-old Ugandan woman recently gave birth to twins. This milestone places her as the oldest woman in Africa to give birth, let alone to twins.
Through the assistance of IVF treatment, the 70-year-old, Safina Namukwaya, became pregnant, making headlines in the Ugandan capital, Kampala Ugandan woman. At the Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Centre, she delivered fraternal twins—a boy and a girl—via caesarean section last Wednesday.
Celebrating the momentous occasion, the hospital took to Facebook, emphasizing that the birth of the twins was not just a medical triumph but a testament to the enduring strength and resilience of the human spirit.
“This story isn’t just about medical success; it’s about the strength and resilience of the human spirit,” the hospital said on Facebook.
Interestingly, this isn’t Safina Namukwaya’s first post-menopausal delivery. In an interview with the private TV channel NTV, she revealed that this marked her second delivery in three years, having given birth to a girl in 2020.
She added that she had experienced multiple difficulties during the pregnancy, including being abandoned by the children’s father. Namukwaya expressed how men often struggle with the news of expecting more than one child and revealed that her partner hadn’t shown up since her admission to the hospital.
“Men don’t like to be told that you are carrying more than one child. Ever since I was admitted here, my man has never showed up,” she said.
While unsure about how she would care for the children, Namukwaya expressed happiness after years of enduring stigma and ridicule for being childless. She recounted a painful experience where a young boy mocked her saying that she was cursed to d!e without a child
“One time, a very young boy heckled at me saying I had been cursed by my mother to d!e without a child,” she said.
