In a shocking turn of events, Michael Zumba, a Masvingo airtime vendor, is suing the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) for US$40,000 after being wrongfully arrested, detained, and maliciously prosecuted. And, you know, losing his two-year-old daughter due to being stuck in prison.
Zumba was arrested on April 24, 2024, for allegedly changing foreign currency while wearing a bib and selling airtime. The police found R20, US$20, and airtime on him – hardly evidence of a high-stakes currency exchange operation.
Zumba is seeking damages for:
– Wrongful arrest: US$15,000
– Wrongful detention: US$10,000
– Malicious prosecution: US$10,000
– Defending malicious allegations: US$5,000
It seems the police were a bit…overzealous in their pursuit of justice. Let’s hope Zumba gets the compensation he deserves – and maybe a new bib to go with it.
