In a bizarre incident that has left residents of Kwekwe scratching their heads, a 57-year-old security guard, Leon Mawadza, decided to trade in his security uniform for a superhero cape and turn a council ambulance into his trusty sidekick. On the night of May 5, 2025, under the cover of darkness, Mawadza siphoned 80 liters of diesel from a parked truck and took the ambulance for a joyride, complete with flashing lights and a wailing siren.
However, his superhero alter ego was short-lived, as the rightful driver discovered the unexplained mileage increase and warm engine the next morning. It seemed Mawadza’s cape wasn’t as stealthy as he thought.
Caught red-handed (and red-faced), Mawadza confessed to tampering with the vehicle’s logbook and stealing diesel. The court wasn’t amused, sentencing him to eight months behind bars and a US$350 fine. The National Prosecuting Authority warned, “Public property is not for personal use. Accountability matters. And, please, don’t try to be a superhero on the job.”
Guess you could say Mawadza’s ambulance adventure hit a pothole of justice!
