In a bizarre incident, a 21-year-old security guard, Juda Gopito, allegedly threatened his employer’s HR manager with a rifle over unpaid wages.
Gopito reportedly marched into the office on April 4th, armed with a service 303 rifle, and demanded five months’ worth of unpaid wages from colleague Karen Rutendo Kaseke. The situation escalated, and he allegedly pointed the rifle at Kaseke, threatening to shoot her if his demands weren’t met. Talk about taking a stand.
Fortunately, authorities swiftly intervened, arresting Gopito at the scene and confiscating his rifle, which was loaded with four rounds. Now, he’s facing charges related to the workplace confrontation.
In a separate incident, a 30-year-old security guard, Confidence Magaisa, was sentenced to six years in prison for shooting a fellow worker at Mangoro 25 Mine. Magaisa, employed by Hisham Security Company, allegedly fired a shot at 23-year-old Elton Sibanda, striking him in the back. Sibanda was rushed to the hospital, where doctors removed the bullet and documented his injuries.
These incidents raise concerns about the role of armed security personnel in Zimbabwe. With the country’s ongoing human rights issues, it’s essential to address these problems and ensure that security personnel are properly trained and held accountable for their actions.
