The African Union Commission (AUC) has joined Zimbabwe and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in commemorating SADC Anti-Sanctions Day, during which the SADC community supports Zimbabwe’s call for the immediate removal of sanctions imposed on the country.
Since 2019, the 39th SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government has designated October 25 as SADC Anti-Sanctions Day. This year’s observance is held under the theme: “Embracing Innovation towards Vision 2030: The Relentless Fight Against Sanctions.”
Nick Mangwana, the Permanent Secretary for Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting Services, confirmed the development on his X (formerly known as Twitter) account.
“AUC Chairperson’s statement in support of ending sanctions against the Republic of Zimbabwe, 25 October 2024, Addis Ababa:”
The statement from Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, reads:
“The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, renews the African Union’s call for the immediate and unconditional lifting of all remaining sanctions imposed on the Republic of Zimbabwe, supporting the Southern African Development Community’s (SADC) commemoration of SADC Anti-Sanctions Day.”
“The Chairperson acknowledges the ongoing political dialogue with the European Union and encourages all parties to pursue constructive discussions aimed at removing the remaining sanctions on institutions and individuals within the Republic of Zimbabwe.”
“The Chairperson remains concerned about the negative impact that continued sanctions have on Zimbabwe’s socio-economic development and recovery efforts.”
