Eight Zimbabwean activists, including two Citizens Coalition for Change councillors, appeared in court yesterday facing allegations of participating in an unsanctioned demonstration against President Emmerson Mnangagwa. The group, which includes two women, one with a three-month-old baby, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with staging a protest in Mkoba suburb, Gweru.
The accused, who were remanded to April 7 for bail application, allegedly waved placards with messages denouncing Mnangagwa, including “ED must go” and “You have stolen enough so just go ED”. The State claims that councillors Phillion Mawere and Parerenyatwa Nyika, used their influence to organize the protest.
This incident highlights the ongoing tensions between the Zimbabwean government and opposition activists, who are demanding change and accountability. The case has sparked concerns about freedom of expression and assembly in Zimbabwe.
