Khami Maximum Prison traded its usual somber mood for a joyful atmosphere during the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) Family Week. Inmates and their loved ones came together, sharing laughter, food, and dance.
The prison’s education hall was filled with the sounds of chatter and laughter as families reunited with their incarcerated loved ones. Plates of braaied meat, snacks, and cold drinks added to the festive atmosphere. Children, a rare sight within the prison walls, were allowed to visit and hug their fathers and uncles.
The highlight of the day was the impromptu dance party in the courtyard. Inmates let loose and showed off their moves, thanks to the lively beats pumped up by Khaya Arts and a local bread company. For a moment, the maximum-security facility felt like a mini-festival zone.
The ZPCS Family Week initiative aims to reconnect inmates with the outside world and remind them of what they’re working towards. As inmates hugged their loved ones and danced to the music, the prison walls seemed to fade away, replaced by a sense of hope and humanity.
