A man from Beitbridge has found himself in legal trouble after allegedly impersonating a Zimborders technician to facilitate the smuggling of three trucks full of chrome ore.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has confirmed that the accused is facing charges related to fraud and smuggling.
According to court documents, the incident took place on September 21, 2024, at the Beitbridge Border Post, one of Zimbabwe’s busiest entry points.
The accused reportedly devised an elaborate scheme, presenting himself as a qualified technician working for Zimborders, the company responsible for managing border facilities.
By doing so, he gained unauthorized access to the scanning gadgets employed by the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA), which are critical in monitoring and inspecting cargo entering and exiting the country.

In addition to accessing the scanning equipment, the man allegedly obtained false credentials that allowed him to process the necessary passage coupons for the three trucks he intended to smuggle across the border.
These passage coupons are vital for the legitimate transport of goods and are closely monitored by customs officials.
After successfully maneuvering through the border by exploiting this pretense, the accused crossed into South Africa with the three trucks loaded with chrome ore, a highly valuable mineral often targeted for smuggling. However, his ruse did not go unnoticed. Authorities in South Africa, suspicious of the operation, apprehended the trucks and the driver upon their arrival.
Following the arrest, the Beitbridge authorities were alerted to the situation, leading to an investigation that ultimately linked the accused to the fraudulent operation. The NPA has since taken the case to court, emphasizing the seriousness of the charges and the need to address the growing problem of smuggling and corruption at border posts.
