Nigel Masona, a 23-year-old resident of Beitbridge, found himself facing serious legal repercussions after an incident that unfolded on October 20, 2024, involving a break-in at his in-law’s house.
The complainant had ensured the security of his home by locking all doors and windows before leaving with his wife for an outing.
However, while they were away, a concerned neighbor alerted him to the alarming news of a trespasser within his property.
Upon returning home, the complainant discovered the door had been forcibly opened, and a safe had been broken into.
To his dismay, ZAR4900 was reported missing from the premises, leading to immediate action. Subsequent police investigations identified Masona as the suspect, resulting in his arrest.
The Beitbridge Magistrates Court subsequently charged him with aggravated unlawful entry due to the nature of the crime and the familial circumstances.
In a formal ruling, Masona was sentenced to a total of 24 months in prison, although four months of this sentence were suspended for a period of five years, allowing for a possible reprieve depending on his future behavior.
Additionally, he was required to return the stolen amount within four months for a further four-month suspension of his sentence.
Ultimately, Masona faces an effective prison term of 16 months.
