A family from Honde Valley has been caught in the throes of a bitter c0nflict over land that has left them deeply divided and struggling.
The Chikazaza family’s troubles began with the d3ath of their father in 2020, a moment that should have brought the family together instead of tearing them apart.
The heart of the dispute lies in the inheritance of the family land, which has become a source of contention between Tonderai Chikazaza and his stepbrothers, the Gadzani brothers.
Tonderai, in a quest for justice, recently took his grievances to Chief Mutasa’s community court, where he accused his stepbrothers of unjustly seizing control of their late father’s land.
“After my father passed away, it felt like everything unraveled. My stepbrothers took over the land, and now my siblings and I are left with nothing,” he lamented. The Gadzani brothers had inherited not only a piece of land, but also the livelihood that Tonderai and his brothers desperately needed.

As the case was presented in court last Saturday, the pain of loss was palpable.
Tonderai explained to the chief and the community members how the Gadzani brothers had appropriated their father’s land, forcing him and his siblings into a position of dire poverty.
With no farmland to cultivate, they were left to rent land from their neighbors, struggling to make ends meet and provide for their families. This was not just a legal dispute; it was a fight for their survival and dignity.
The historical roots of the family’s conflict run deep. Tonderai argued that the Gadzani brothers, being his stepbrothers, should not have priority over the land belonging to their father’s biological children. H
e believed that inheritance laws favored blood relations in such disputes and claimed that their father would have wanted his real sons to inherit the land. “We are the ones who shared his blood. We should be the ones to inherit what belonged to him,” he stated, his voice filled with a mix of anger and desperation.
On the other side, the Gadzani brothers defended their actions, presenting their own perspective on the matter. They argued that the family dynamics were more complicated than Tonderai portrayed them. They claimed that their late father had intended for them to manage the land, whether due to practical considerations or a different understanding of inheritance.
However, their assertions did little to ease the tensions felt by Tonderai and his siblings, who continued to feel the weight of their predicament.
