The Presidential Borehole Drilling Scheme has begun in certain areas of Binga South, where locals are experiencing water shortages due to a prolonged dry spell.
This was announced by Matabeleland North Provincial Affairs Minister Richard Moyo, who also mentioned that drilling rigs are already on site.
“We engaged the Zimbabwe National Water Authority and the drilling of boreholes has since started,” Moyo said.
“The government has also decided that the boreholes be powered by solar.”
He said the government had disbursed a number of solar system kits.
“The government had also pledged 7 000 solar system kits but I am not sure how many will be distributed to Binga district.”
Despite its location on the banks of Africa’s fourth-longest river, the Zambezi, Binga continues to grapple with water challenges.
In February, Fanuel Cumanzala, the Member of Parliament for Binga South, revealed that residents in his constituency are trekking long distances in search of water.
Cumanzala emphasized that borehole drilling alone would not resolve Binga’s water challenges and urged the government to construct dams as a long-term solution.
The Member of Parliament highlighted that wards 4, 12, and 25 were the most severely affected by water challenges.
A resident of Lubimbi, Pangani Lubimbi, mentioned that locals faced increased risks of wildlife att@cks as they travelled long distances in search of water.
Lubimbi further explained that water shortages had led to inc!dents of s3xual @buse against young girls while they were in search of water.
