Nothando, a mother from Gauteng, is distraught and financially drained when a handsome stranger she met at work swooped in, swept her off her feet, and stole her R2.8 million pension lump amount.
The mother of two sons believed she had found love when Henry Mugisha, a smooth-talking man, expressed interest in her and her family. Their whirlwind affair lasted a year, during which Mugisha earned her trust and persuaded her to engage in a business endeavor.
Nothando had no idea that Mugisha’s intentions were anything but sincere. He departed in January 2024, leaving her with only memories and an empty bank account.

Nothando, a diligent educator with 30 years of experience, had saved her pension to ensure a secure future. Now, she and her sons are struggling to make ends meet.
The police have confirmed that a case has been opened at Pretoria North SAPS, and Nothando believes that justice will be served. Her experience serves as a warning about the perils of love scams and the need to be cautious while meeting new individuals.
As Nothando rebuilds her life, she wishes to warn people about the strategies used by scammers such as Mugisha. “Be cautious of strangers who seem too good to be true,” she tells us. “Don’t allow love blind you to the facts of a situation.
