BULAWAYO – Highlanders have announced the departure of head coach Baltemar Brito and his assistant following the pending expiry of the two’s contracts with the football giants end of this December.
Bosso announced the departure of the coaches in a statement on Monday.
“The club would like to inform its members, fans and all other stakeholders of the departure of coach Brito and assistant coach Antonio Torres.
“Coach Brito and Torres’ contracts with the club end on the 31st of December 2023; the club and the two coaches have mutually agreed not to extend their stay with the club beyond the stated period.”
Brito started the 2023 season with a lot of promise, leading the side to a 19-game unbeaten run.
The Portuguese mentor’s tactical prowess would run would later come under test in the second half of the season when Bosso mysteriously surrendered their title charge after suffering a string of defeats.
The former Chelsea assistant coach’s commitment to the club also petered out when he got hired as interim Zimbabwe Warriors coach, something that saw his absence from the Bosso bench in some of the matches which came at the tail end of the premiership season.
Highlanders ended the season positioned number five after accumulating 49 points from 34 matches.
In past interviews with the local press, Brito expressed his wish to extend his stay at the club but admitted the decision lied with the premiership giant’s bosses.
“We were trying to do our best to achieve something good with the club. It depends not on us because it should be two parties agreeing. Let’s see what the future brings,” he said.
Brito said if they were not approached with a proposal for contract renewal, “what we need to do is to pack and go back to our country”.
