Chimani Tsambola, a 34-year-old farm worker from Marondera, has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for the brutal murder of his estranged wife, Portia Masaiti. The court heard that Tsambola attacked Masaiti with an iron bar on October 1, 2018, at a temporary refuge provided by a neighbor.
Justice Mutevedzi described Tsambola’s actions as a “merciless assault,” stating that he had meticulously plotted the murder, taking steps to ensure its execution. “The accused ambushed, attacked, and killed the deceased in cold blood,” Justice Mutevedzi said.
During the trial, Tsambola denied the charges, but witness testimony painted a different picture. Witnesses testified that Tsambola had sought Masaiti after her departure from their home, ultimately locating her at a local farmer’s compound. The court also heard that Tsambola had taken their children to his mother’s home in Chegutu, clearing the path for his dark intentions.
Justice Mutevedzi sentenced Tsambola to 35 years in prison, emphasizing the seriousness of the crime. “This court cannot and will not condone a belief system that treats women as property, to be destroyed if they choose to leave or seek happiness elsewhere. The savagery of this crime must be met with a sentence that reflects its seriousness,” the judge said.
Tsambola’s defense team argued that he was possessed by evil spirits and acted in self-defense, but the court dismissed these assertions. The prosecution presented compelling evidence, including the iron bar, Tsambola’s warned and cautioned statement, and a crime scene sketch.
This case highlights the importance of addressing domestic violence and promoting healthy relationships. Unfortunately, cases like this are not isolated incidents.
