A wave of brutal attacks by machete-wielding thugs has left residents of Bulawayo’s Entumbane suburb shaken and frightened. Six people were injured in separate incidents along the railway line, with some victims stripped naked and left with severe injuries. The attacks have sparked concern, and the community is seeking action to prevent further incidents.
The incidents occurred between 5 pm and 6 pm on Thursday, leaving residents on high alert. Ward 10 Councillor Khalazani Ndlovu confirmed the attacks, stating that the community is not okay and that people are frightened. “People in Entumbane are not okay. People are frightened, and the whole community is shaken,” Ndlovu said.
One victim, Busani Sibanda, recounted his terrifying experience of being attacked while searching for cow dung near the railway line. “They emerged from the maize crops and started attacking and chopping us with their machetes,” Sibanda said. The victims’ accounts paint a picture of chaos and fear, with the machete gangs seemingly targeting anyone in their path.
The councillor is engaging with police to find solutions, suggesting warnings and increased vigilance. Residents are advised to avoid isolated areas, travel in groups, and report suspicious activity immediately. The community is calling for increased security measures to prevent further attacks.
Police are investigating the incidents, and three victims remain hospitalized at Mpilo Central Hospital. The authorities are working to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice. The community is anxious for results and wants to see action taken to ensure their safety.
The Entumbane community is urging the authorities to take concrete steps to address the situation. Increased police patrols, community policing initiatives, and public awareness campaigns are some of the measures being considered. The goal is to restore a sense of safety and security in the area.
The machete attacks in Entumbane have left a trail of fear and uncertainty. However, with the community coming together and the authorities taking action, there is hope for a safer future. The residents of Entumbane deserve to live without fear of violence and intimidation.
