In a recent case in Bulawayo, a woman from Mzilikazi named Sheila Bhunu, aged 51, has been fined US$200 for stealing money entrusted to her by a burial society.
The incident occurred when Bhunu was given the cash, totalling US$907, for safekeeping. The judgment was delivered by Bulawayo magistrate Nomagugu Maphosa, who found Bhunu guilty of the theft.
As per the ruling, Bhunu must pay the fine before October 31. Failure to do so will result in a three-month jail sentence. Additionally, Maphosa ordered Bhunu to compensate the burial society by returning US$892.
According to the prosecution, the incident took place in September of the previous year, although the specific date remains unknown. During a meeting held at Manwele Beer Garden in Mzilikazi, Bhunu was entrusted with a cash box belonging to the burial society. However, she admitted to the court that she had used the money to support her family.
