Bulawayo detectives have made a major arrest, apprehending two suspects in possession of raw ivory.
The operation was carried out on July 16 2024, following a tip-off from sources that led to the arrest of Brilliant Mkhosana (39) and Jonathan Mkhwedu (33) at a location near the corner of R Mugabe Way and Masotsha Ndlovu Road.
The two suspects were found in possession of two pieces of raw ivory, which are valued at US$780. The arrest is a huge development in the ongoing efforts to combat wildlife crime in Zimbabwe, particularly the poaching of endangered species such as elephants and rhinos.
According to police reports, detectives had received information about the suspected illegal activity and had been tracking the suspects for some time before making the arrest.
The operation was carried out with precision and professionalism, resulting in the successful apprehension of the two suspects.
The seized ivory is believed to have been sourced from poached elephants, and its illegal trade can have devastating consequences for the conservation of these majestic animals.
The Zimbabwean government has been working tirelessly to combat wildlife crime, including poaching, and this arrest is seen as a major victory in this fight.
The arrested suspects are expected to appear in court soon to face charges related to the illegal possession of ivory. If convicted, they could face severe penalties, including imprisonment and fines.
