Nothando Banana, a 35-year-old woman from Barham Green in Bulawayo, has been accused of ste@ling $24,000 from her employer, a steel manufacturing company in the Belmont industrial area.
According to media report, the alleged th3ft occurred on October 15 during an armed robbery in which assailants made off with $32,500 [user input].
Banana, charged with theft of trust funds, reportedly attempted to cover her tracks by blaming the robbers for the missing money.
She appeared in court before Bulawayo regional magistrate Mrs. Benhilda Chiundura, with Mr. Jethro Mada representing the State. Banana was granted $100 bail and is scheduled to return to court on November 1.
During a recent armed robbery, suspects confronted night duty security guards and workers, ordering them to lie down and binding their hands and legs with shoelaces.
The gang then used a grinder to break into two safes upstairs, stealing from one but leaving the other, which was entrusted to Nothando Banana, intact.
However, upon investigation, company authorities discovered that Banana’s safe, containing $27,000, had been tampered with.
When questioned, Banana admitted to using the money, with only $2,600 remaining. Banana was arrested after a lavish spending spree in Bulawayo.
This incident follows closely on the heels of Zimbabwe’s largest heist, where AK47-wielding robbers stole approximately $4 million from an Ecobank branch.
