Brighton Chipunza, a prominent Bulawayo car dealer and socialite known as “Dash,” has garnered significant attention as he prepares for a bail ruling today amid serious allegations of ste@ling a luxury vehicle from a local car wash.
Initially slated for a hearing yesterday, Chipunza’s case faced a delay due to other matters awaiting the magistrate’s attention, with Bulawayo regional magistrate Mrs. Benhilda Chiundura now slated to preside over the proceedings.
The case has captured public interest not only because of Chipunza’s celebrity status but also due to his alarming behavior outside the courtroom, where he reportedly threatened the complainant, Ms. Silibaziso Ncube, warning her to “watch her back” while also hurling insults at reporters.
The gravity of the allegations stems from his arrest last Friday for allegedly stealing a South African-registered Toyota Fortuner from Tunnel Car Wash, located just beyond Bulawayo’s city centre.
Prosecutor Mr. Dominic Moyo opposed Chipunza’s bail, emphasizing that he poses a flight risk, especially considering his involvement in multiple pending legal matters.
The stolen vehicle was tracked down using GPS technology, leading authorities to Harare, where a suspected accomplice, Julius Chitunhu, was subsequently arrested.
Chitunhu has appeared in court and was granted bail set at ZWL$10,000, with his trial scheduled for December 11.
This series of events has positioned Chipunza’s case in the spotlight, inviting scrutiny not only of his alleged criminal actions but also the dynamics of celebrity and public perception in legal proceedings.
The unfolding drama highlights the intersection of fame, legal troubles, and public response, creating a narrative that is drawing widespread commentary and concern within the community.
As the court date approaches, the anticipation surrounding the outcome continues to build, with many wondering how this situation will impact Chipunza’s reputation and business endeavors moving forward.
The legal battle is expected to raise further questions about accountability and the treatment of public figures within the justice system.
