A CAR dealer, Timukudzei Nhongo, is in trouble after he allegedly used a civil servant’s details to import a vehicle without her consent.
Nhongo is said to have paid for a Toyota Corolla Axio, and asked Tebhinas Kaseke, a Ministry of Health and Child Care worker, to apply for rebate on the vehicle.
Kaseke’s application was refused, due to the stated value of the car being too much to qualify for rebate.
Upon being informed of this, Nhongo allegedly processed a fake rebate letter in Kaseke’s name and used it to import the car.
He registered the car in Kaseke’s name and sold it to Charles Chimutsanya.
This is contrary to the provision of vehicle import rebate, which states that any vehicle imported under the scheme, cannot be sold within five years of importation.
Nhongo appeared before Harare magistrate Dennis Mangosi yesterday.
He was remanded out of custody to September 5 pending finalisation of investigations.
The State said through the use of the fake ZIMRA rebate letter, the tax collector suffered prejudice through unpaid import duty whose value is yet to be ascertained.
