As the crisis persists, CCC MPs have cried foul and blamed Nelson Chamisa as they explained why it’s difficult for them to leave Parliament.
The Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) has been in disarray since Nelson Chamisa threw the towel. On 25 January, the President of the two-year-old political party quit, saying the political organisation had become infiltrated and contaminated. He also cited the unfavourable political situation in Zimbabwe in 2023 as motivation for his unexpected decision.
Since his resignation, three CCC MPs have followed suit and quit the party and their positions in Parliament. These are former party spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere, former ZINASU president Takudzwa Ngadziore and Masvingo Urban MP Martin Mureri.
Opposition party supporters have been calling for the other MPs to resign en masse from the party and, consequently, from Parliament. Once an MP resigns from the August house, a by-election will occur to replace them.
Some people on social media are saying resigning, or not, will indicate the genuineness of the opposition politicians and their loyalty to Chamisa.
Journalist Hopewell Chin’ono tweeted that the MPs behind Chamisa should prove so by resigning. However, hordes of them reached out to him and explained their complicated predicament.
“Many CCC MPs have engaged me after I posted the attached tweet. Their predicament lies not in being disloyal to the cause but in the huge financial debts that they find themselves in after funding their own 2023 election campaigns.
“They also felt that I and others were being unfair to them when we castigated them for not leaving parliament after Nelson Chamisa’s announcement without paying attention to their financial obligations as these obligations may ruin their lives. They argue that they don’t even know what is coming after departing from parliament.”

The parliamentarians also revealed that they were never consulted on Chamisa’s decision. They said this lack of consulting is what caused all the problems in CCC:
“They also argue that the disengagement move was done without consultation, so they were not prepared for it. Many of them say that the very root cause of not consulting others in the party is what led to this crisis.”
