Former Citizens Coalition for change leader, Nelson Chamisa has sent a congratulatory message to the outgoing President of Botswana His Excellency President Mokgweetsi Masisi for accepting defeat, saying that it was clear his Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) party had lost “massively”.
“I will respectfully step aside and participate in a smooth transition process ahead of inauguration,” Masisi said in a press conference on Friday.
Taking to his X handle account, Zimbabwe’s prominent opposition leader wrote the following:
“CONGRATULATIONS and well done President Masisi for the exceptional maturity and allowing for the smooth transition of power. I’ve just been listening to President @OfficialMasisi press briefing. President Masisi indicated that he just had a phone call with President-elect @duma_boko”
“It’s great to be gracious in defeat and magnanimous in victory. This is how it should be. The vote, voice and will of the citizens must always be respected. This is good for Africa. This is so refreshing! God bless Botswana. God bless Africa!”
According to early results released by the Electoral Commission, voters in Botswana have rejected the country’s long-serving governing party in a result that marks a political earthquake in the diamond-rich southern African nation.
The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) – in power since independence in 1966 – has won only one parliamentary seat as of early Friday morning, early election results show.
